Negotiation Skills

What is a Negotiation and why are negotiation skills extremely important in business?

Negotiation is a dialogue intended to resolve disputes, to produce an agreement upon courses of action, to bargain for individual or collective advantage, or to craft outcomes to satisfy various interests. It is the primary method of alternative dispute resolution.

Reality is that all of us are negotiating all the time and from a young age no really teaches us to negotiate, even though it’s a crucial skill.

Consequently there are three fundamental ways that people learn to negotiate:

  • The first is by watching others
  • The second is by doing what comes naturally
  • The third way is by trial and error

There is nothing wrong with this method, and it is really how most people learn.

  • You must recognize and learn by your mistakes.
  • If you don’t, you are doomed to repeat them, over and over.
  • But often we don’t say “Here is the mistake I made.”
  • Or, “Here is something I could have done differently.”

When we don’t get what we want in a negotiation we tend to say;

  • “The other person was a real jerk”
  • Or, “they wanted too much money anyway”

We don’t step back and ask, “Why didn’t this work”

The whole purpose of this teaching is to show you how to look at what works and what doesn’t. And also to give you the tools that will allow you to negotiate successfully.

Watching others

What works for one, will not work for another.

Doing what comes naturally

This will work in some scenarios, but not in negotiating as most people are uncomfortable when it comes to a negotiation.

Trial and error

This is where it can become quite expensive and no one wants to lose a lot of money learning through the mistakes.

In business, the cost of a negotiation going wrong can send you broke and no one wants to see that happen.
